THE FIRST FESTIVAL OF ROSÉ WINE PRESENTED AT VINITALY. LIDIA BASTIANICH PRESIDES
They’re talking about it, they’re writing about it, and they’re drinking more and more of it throughout the world: rosé is in with consumers. And it’s a cliché to think that only women like it. The data speaks loudly: world production weighs in at 22.7 hectoliters, about 10% of the wine consumed worldwide. Italy is the 2nd exporter in the world, with 16% of the volume. In the USA alone, in 2016 the sale of rosé wine went up by 6.8% with sales of over 816 million dollars.
The National Association of the Women of Wine (Associazione nazionale Le Donne del Vino) is dedicating 3 days to rosé wine: Sorrento Rosé is the first festival of rosé wine that will take place from May 12 to 14 at the famous location on the Sorrentino peninsula. An exceptional woman endorsing the event: the chef Lidia Bastianich.
The event has the sponsorship of the Town of Sorrento, the Region of Campania and the partnership of AIS Campania (Italian Association of Sommeliers), as well as the support of: Vetreria Etrusca, Brevetti Waf, network for sustainable packaging: 100% Campania, ABC Travel, Villa Fiorentino and Banca di Credito Popolare – Torre del Greco agency.
Thus for three days, everything will be coming up rosé in restaurants, pizzerias, and wine bars in the center of Sorrento. The heart of the event will be at Villa Fiorentino, headquarters of the Sorrento Foundation, that has the goal of promoting and shaping expressions of culture and art, and enhancing the local environmental and historical-artistic heritage, as well as promoting events and marketing initiatives for the area. Many synergies come together for the public part, represented by the Town, and private entities who are doing their part. The Foundation will plan important events aimed at promoting the image of the City of Sorrento.
All the set-ups and decorations inside the Villa were done by the Network for sustainable packaging: 100% Campania with eco-sustainable material and recycled cardboard.
Round table discussions, talks with women producers of wine, a table for tastings with over 100 types of wine from all over Italy and abroad, finger food and ‘street pizza’ by Antonino Esposito: all this will be part of an intense and rich program that will speak loudly about this versatile, social, positive wine.
“Rosé is not pink,” say the Women of Wine. “Our commitment,” the national President, Donatella Cinelli Colombini states, “is to promote the culture of rosé wine through an event that aims at talking about rosé in all its shades, from the terroir to the vines, production techniques to sensory aspects, with an eye to comparing the various national areas of production.”
Many guests will be present: from women wine producers, to journalists, ambassadors of the Women of Wine and sommeliers.
Strategic to the planning is the roundtable discussion “Pizza and Rosé Wine” on the program for Saturday, May 13 at 10 a.m. at the Hotel Europa Palace. This will be the chance to reflect on future developments of rosé and its pairing with pizza, on the commercial potential in Italy and abroad, and on the ways of effectively communicating this pairing in an innovative way.
The City of Sorrento will host a press tour for women only, for journalists specialized in the food & wine sector. Among the activities of the press tour, an excursion in a caicco with the chef Giuseppe Aversa, owner of the restaurant Il Buco in Sorrento, with one Michelin star.
